Yarn Weights, Gauges and Suggested
Needle Sizes

Yarns are categorized by yarn weights as listed below. The "0 - 6" system of yarn label symbols from the Craft Yarn Council of America are simple to understand, going from thin to thick. But be familiar with the older terms - lace and fingering weight, sock, sport and baby weight, DK, worsted and bulky - they are very commonly used.

Please be aware that these are general guidelines for yarn weights and types but shouldn't be used alone to interchange yarns in a pattern, especially for a fitted garment. Check your yarn label and always do a test swatch to be sure about the correct gauge.

Yarn symbol: "0" Lace
Yarn Type: Lace or Fingering - most often used in lace patterns for fine intricate detail or on larger needles for lacy openwork patterns.

Stitches per 4 inches: 33-40
Needle size: 1.5mm - 2.25mm (US 000 - 1)

Yarn symbol: "1" Super Fine
Yarn Type: Sock, Fingering or Baby - This is a fine yarn used to make little objects, like socks and baby clothes.

Stitches per 4 inches: 27-32
Needle size: 2mm - 3.5mm (US 0 - 4)

Yarn symbol: "2" Fine
Yarn Type: Sport or Baby – a little bit thicker but many of the same uses as 'super fine.'

Stitches per 4 inches: 23-26
Needle size: 3.25mm-3.75mm (US 3 - 5)

Yarn symbol: "3" Light
Yarn Type: DK (Double Knit) or Light Worsted - This is still a thin yarn - appropriate for small items but getting more into the range also suitable for larger projects like sweaters, scarves and blankets.

Stitches per 4 inches: 21-24
Needle size: 3.75mm - 4.5mm (US 5 - 7)

Yarn symbol: "4" Medium
Yarn Type: Worsted, Afghan or Aran Weight - This is the most common weight you will encounter. It makes great sweaters, but can also be used for throws, blankets, hats, scarves, mittens...and so on. It is also a good weight to learn with.

Stitches per 4 inches: 16-20
Needle size: 4.5mm - 5.5mm (US 7 - 9)

Yarn symbol: "5" Bulky
Yarn Type: Chunky, Craft or Rug - a thick yarn that works up quickly on larger needles - a good choice for something thick and warm. It can also be used to make a quick throw or blanket.

Stitches per 4 inches: 12-15
Needle size: 5.5mm - 8mm (US 9 - 11)

Yarn symbol: "6" Super Bulky
Yarn Type: Super Bulky, Super Chunky or Roving - This is extremely thick making it the fastest to work with. Also great for a throw or blanket.

Stitches per 4 inches: 6-11
Needle size: 8mm and higher (US 11 and higher)
