Herbal Mordant - Eco-friendly
and Easy to Use

The herbal mordant available from Blue Castle Fiber Arts and included in the dye kit is a combination of two plants: Terminalia Chebula, more commonly known as Myrobalan and Punica Granatum which is Pomegranate.

Interestingly, both myrobalan and pomegranate are also used as dyes. But they are also high in tannins which make them great mordants. In India, where this mordant comes from, they use the fruit of the Terminalia tree while in Africa they use the bark and leaves. With the pomegranate it is the rind of the fruit used.

Our mordant is very easy to use, eco-friendly and requires a very small amount, only requiring 4% weight of fiber. As for dyes, they are measured as a percentage of the dry weight of the fiber being used. So, for example, if dyeing 1 pound of fiber, you would use just over half an ounce of mordant (metric 1 kilogram of fiber, use 40 grams of mordant).

For more information on mordants, please go to the Mordant page.
